Haxier Technology Enterprise Developed A System That Transforms Normal Vending Machines To Inclusive Ones With ATLAS

July 13, 2021

Standard vending machines are manufactured to meet the needs of sighted people in obtaining beverages. The usage of these machines is also important to another group of people especially the blind community to get the same benefit as sighted people. Unfortunately, due to the limited functions of the existing machines, it is difficult for blind people to use, such as learning what drinks are available, unless they are assisted by their sighted peers. Because of this, ATLAS Vending, a leading vending machine company, devised a brilliant solution to allow the blind to access their vending machines. The information on the machine is presented via audio and Braille labelling developed by Haxier Technology. In addition, the machine is also come with a motion sensor to enable the audio to be triggered.

The process has been iteratively conducted to ensure the final outcomes meet  users' expectations and requirements. The iMap presents the information through audio output and tactile symbols. It is also equipped with a motion sensor to enable the sound to be triggered. Additionally, a buzzer is included with iMap to acknowledge users about the location of the device.

A session was carried out by the R&D unit to obtain feedback from the students of Gurney Training Centre, KL (GTC) and staffs of MAB on the effectiveness of the tactile layout (floor plan). The tactile floor plan of MAB incorporated with audio description braille indicator and embossed diagram, which will enable the visually impaired to locate their direction in MAB. This project is being carried out with the support of Haxier Technology Enterprise. 30 respondents, both sighted and visually impaired participated in this session and shared their feedback on the floor plan. In future, MAB aims to introduce this idea to other public area to enhance the accessibility of the visually impaired.
